Background

Prior to attending law school, Marina began her career in human resources and later worked as a registered insurance broker in Ontario. Her wealth of experience allows her to provide clients with straightforward and practical legal advice, in a timely and efficient manner. She has experience working for both Bay Street law firms and with Alberta's largest employer. She was hired as a first-year summer student and then articled with Norton Rose Fulbright Canada LLP (NRF), a top-tier leading national/ international law firm. NRF then hired her on to practice as an associate where she worked in both the litigation group and the employment & labour group. At NRF, she developed the required skills and knowledge necessary to represent a wide variety of corporate clients, including fortune 100 companies.
Marina then moved on to join the Labour & Employment team at Alberta Health Services (AHS), Alberta's largest employer (over 120,000 employees), as in-house Labour Counsel. At AHS, she was responsible for advising senior management, Labour Relations, and Human Resources professionals on a wide variety of policy and legal issues affecting the organization. During her time at AHS, Marina was lead counsel in a precedent-setting proceeding before the Alberta Labour Relations Board, addressing new legislative changes to marshalling procedures under the Alberta Labour Relations Code. As part of her day-to-day responsibilities, Marina also managed numerous files that involved a multitude of employment issues including: wrongful dismissal claims; labour arbitration grievances; privacy issues; and, human rights claims.
Upon moving to Ontario, Marina joined another leading national law firm, Gowling WLG LLP, in their Employment, Labour & Equities group. In 2019, Marina realized her dream of opening her own practice and founded HMS Law.
